Erzberg

Run

20.07.2024

Austria's biggest mountain running event: 21 years, 1.500 participants, 20 nations and thousands of spectators. The common goal is the summit of the Styrian Pyramid. In order to reach the summit, the floors of the mountain must be overcome. The all-round view of the magnificent mountain panorama of the Eisenerzer Alps - from the Eisenerzer Reichenstein over the Kaiserschild - compensates as a reward for the exertions.

Unique ambience

"There is something special about the Erzberg" - connoisseurs know what they are talking about. Even the starting ritual at the Erzberg Run is anything but ordinary! To the sounds of the specially composed Erzberg symphony "26th floor - 7th horizon", everyone gets into the right mood for the run, until the deafening blast finally clears the course. By the way it opens only once in a year and exclusively for endurance athletes. The goal, which is the summit of the Erzberg, is usually a closed area. The Erzberg shuttle also takes visitors up to the summit and thus guarantees a finish line experience under thunderous applause!

Course with many highlights

Since last year, participants can look forward to a new course: with just over 13 kilometers and a total of 600 altitude difference, the new course is initially rather flat over very scenic passages up to about kilometer 2, from where the route then climbs continuously in a slight to medium gradient on paved roads and paths. A special highlight in the 2nd part of the route is the crossing of the Erzberg through the
1.2 km long illuminated practice tunnel of Europe's most modern tunnel research center "Zentrum am Berg". From about kilometer 11 the route then climbs even more sharply to the finish sprint, which demands everything again with about 200 meters of altitude up to the otherwise inaccessible summit point.

Exclusive summit experience

Erzberg is the largest active mining site in Central Europe and is (almost) 365 days a year dedicated to ore mining. On a few days, however, Erzberg is also a legendary film set and the scene of spectacular outdoor & extreme sports events, such as the world-famous Erzbergrodeo, the toughest off-road motorcycle race in the world, or the "Krone Erzberg Adventure Days", Austria's largest mountain running sports festival. The Styrian Pyramid, as the Erzberg is also called due to its shape, is embedded in an impressive alpine landscape. However, the 360° panorama is reserved for the participants of the Erzberg Run & Erzberg Walk, who are exclusively allowed to enter the highest point at an altitude of about 1,460 meters.
